The Drobo Storage Robot

An interesting piece of hardware for the data dump is Drobo from Data Robotics, Inc. Drobo is in standard configuration connected via Firewire or USB2.0 as a direct drive to the host.

In addition, there are DroboShare makes the Drobo a NAS, but DroboShare supports out of the box just as SMB network file system.

Here come the Drobo into play with these packages DroboShare can be extended by several useful features such as:

  • Firefly - an iTunes Media Server
  • Userland NFS - an NFS server
  • Dropbear SSH - an SSH server

In addition, there are outside of DroboApps backmyfruitup for TimeMachine backups on Drobo via DroboShare store.

Drobo also interesting to the capacity can be increased dynamically, ie the smallest plate is out, larger disk clean and ready. Drobo takes care of the expansion of the volumes, this data is stored redundantly, of course.

Depending on the size of the disks can be expected with the capacity Drobolator be determined.

See the wonder in a Videpräsentation on the Drobo website, many thanks to the very nice to be regarded "Cali Lewis".

Here are some reviews Drobo or DroboShare to:

  2. yep, but if he does what is promised, it is worth it I think.
Just the simple extension makes life easier.

Also, the feature with the Time Machine backups can not be ignored.

  3. I now have my drobo a bit longer, my current one DROBO FS had risen, and is already busy studded with data * g *
Now I wonder how I can install the firefly, in other words it is installed but how do I get to run it, that was one of the reasons why I bought it.
